SWORD voice is back with a solo album that shows off his more melodic rock profile. From the opener "Dead end road' you listen at a solid, melodic heavy rock album in the vein of TRIUMPH, APRIL WINE, JOURNEY, HEADPINS, NIGHT RANGER and he really nails it. The album has some interesting participants Lee Aaron, Brad Gillis, Robby Krieger and is pointing at melodic rock with some blues overtones like at French spoken "Croire en l'Homme (feat. Lee Aaron)" a song Pat Travers would love to have on his albums as also Johnny Hallyday. The cover of "Real me" (THE WHO) has a more Hard rock feeling then the metal version of WASP, yet remains a great song and Hughes knows how to handle it along with Tommy Aldridge, Brad Gillis, Rudy Sarzo). But the real meaning of the album comes again at songs like "Carry The Torch" (feat. Brad Gillis) where Hughes let his inner AOR self come out ,all guns blazing.
Then Rick decides to change course in a song "Will of the Gun" that could be among the best U2,ALARM never wrote. He puts petal to the metal at "Shake My Soul" (feat. Brad Gillis) a heavy rock dynamite before slowing down at a powerful ballad, in the best BON JOVI style at "Someday". Then he changes course at a blues triggered, DOORS inspired boogie the "Dans la Peau" (feat. Robby Krieger) sung in french. A tearful ballad follows in "Perfect World" establishing him as an underrated AOR singer with great potential and for me a perfect voice for bands in the vein of GIANT, NIGHT RANGER, DAMN YANKEES."Ca Va Brasser" is another twelve bar sung in French, speedy and rocking before the album comes to a closing with "Dans la Peau" (feat. Robby Krieger) (French Version) .
Overall this is a great melodic rock album, showing Hughes much underrated talent as a melodic rock vocalist.
