FANS OF THE DARK- "Video"

Three times a charm as they say and the new album by Swedish FANS OF THE DARK proves it. The concept of the album “Video” is about growing up in the 80’s and 90’s and how great it was to have access to a local video store. The whole idea about going there as a group or alone and deciding on what you were going to watch. It was something you could spend a whole night on, a pastime, something to occupy your thoughts for quite a while. These days we are struggling with our attention spans for just a few seconds. The video era was the opposite of that, everything took time” as drummer Freddie Allen says.

“In a way, listening to the album as a whole is also about that. It takes you on a journey through a lost era, but it is an era which you can rediscover and relive through great music and films. This album is our way of saluting that great era. The sound is a bit pinker and fluffier than the last two albums, which we hope might be to the liking of all you AOR lovers out there. This one’s for you”, continues Freddie.

 FANS OF THE DARK, formed in 2020 by Freddie Allen, drummer and main songwriter, and lead vocalist Alex Falk, when they reconnected a few years after high school, with a vision to create a band which would mix the melodies and the approach of classic and melodic rock. Their debut album “Fans of the Dark”, released in 2021, attracted the attention of Frontiers Records and led to the band signing a multi-album deal. Their second album “Suburbia” was released in 2022, and it was followed by the band’s first live show at Frontiers Rock Fest in Stockholm the same year. By then, they were permanently joined by guitarist Oscar Bromvall and bass player Rickard Gramfors.

So if you haven't heard "Suburbia" , one of the best releases in 2022, do it and go for "Video'. With crystal clear production and sound made for FM radio the band aimed ,as always, to the mainstream rock  radio fans of the 80s. For all of us who loved the West Coast sound and the Scandinavian scene, from SURVIVOR,FOREIGNER to SKAGARACK,PRETTY MAIDS and TREAT there is a treat here. In songs like :"Find your love" and "In the bay of blood" you can hear the best songs Jim Peterik hasn't composed yet, with echoes of SURVIVOR and VAN HALEN of the 5150 era, with great hooks and especially admired keyboard melodic lines. But the same band gets heavier,yet melodic at " The Neon Phantom" and "The Dagger Of Tunis" Join them on a musical journey, full of great hooks and unforgettable melodies, just listen to "Chrisitne" and music to relax,enjoy and take the worries away. Another great album for a band who knows how to write melodic,catchy tunes.

 BEAUX GRIS GRIS AND THE APOCALYPSE- "Hot nostalgia radio" (GROW VISION Music & Records)

One of the most underrated bands in the modern retro rock n roll scene. Driven by female powerhouse vocalis,tLouisiana-born-and-raised musician Greta Valenti (Well Hung Heart) and UK British Blues Hall of Fame Inductee, Robin Davey (The Hoax, DVL, Well Hung Heart) on.guitar with the help of some talented musicians to support their musical dream.

BGATA are a mesmerizing mix of twelve bar rock n roll, 50s-60s female bands and doo woop sound, New Orleans, and Hard rock. Imagine BLACK CROWES meeting THE RONETTES to jam under Phil Spector's orders and you are as close as you can get, adding in a good measure the melancholy and the 90s alternative feeling of bands like MAZY STAR. An album that has the melody and the sentimental power of the 60s female bands, Soul and passion along with the swagger and the groove of Nashville and BLACK CROWES. From rock n roll damnation of "Oh Yeah!" ,"Satisfy Your Queen", "Wild Woman" to laid back tunes like."Middle of the Night", "Sad When I'm Dancing","All I Could Do Was Cry" with their 60s influences from the all girl groups of the era, to the countrified "Mama Cray" and the more "alternative "Marie",  BGATA are a band that demands and earn your attention delivering a blizzard of music that never lets you go,even when the listening of the album has ended.

A feel good vibe ,diversified, colourful and vigorous in those days of apathy and misery, a fresh sound looking at the past and living in the present. Catching them live should be your next task, after listening to this great record.

 DEEP PURPLE - "=1"

Steve Morse's departure was a heavy blow for fans of Morse sound in DEEP PURPLE, like me.Although DEEP PURPLE have come to rejuvenate with the take over by Bob Ezerin as a producer, Morse was responsible for the resurrection of DEEP PURPLE and the man who drove them through the 21st century. But with him stricken by fate and with his "resignation" the most appropriate thing as his wife's health was and should have been his main priority, the DP organization decided to move on as bills and alimonies , mortgages etc don't wait amlong with father time. 

I had my second thoughts on Ian Gillan's voice as I have for Bob Catley but in the studio he still has the stamina and the fire. New guy Simon Mc Bride, a DP acquaintance through Don Aireys solo band seems to be filling the gap more than adequate. With his own sound , abit more bluesy and clean than his predecessor he leaves his mark on some great songs in the new album. DP are coming through Coronavirus and a cover album as a new, eager to prove band and in songs like "Sharp Shooter :, Lazy Sod" the imaginative "Portable door" or the slow mid tempo emotional "If I Were You". Gillans tongue in cheek spirit lives on in "No Money To Burn' and the band is in high spirits in every song of the album. Hard rock for the old fans who feel nostalgia for the 70s, or music from a vivid organization. As "Show me" and "I'll catch you" show is more of the latter than the former, because DP are in fine shape and know how to evolve in time, despite the critics who still praise every miserable OASIS reunion and dismiss the glory days of British hard rock.

Gillan says they still have another album inside them and their current set list has enough new songs to prove that DP are not a greatest hits travelling circus but a band that believe in themselves and their fans. A great album and i have to say unexpectedly good after such a vital change in personnel.

«Η μέτρηση του μεσημβρινού» -Ντάνι Γκέτζ (Κέδρος)

 Παρίσι, 1792. Η Γαλλική Επανάσταση στο αποκορύφωμά της. Με εντολή της Εθνοσυνέλευσης, οι αστρονόμοι Ντελάμπρ και Μεσέν αναλαμβάνουν να υπολογίσουν την ακριβή απόσταση ανάμεσα σε δύο πόλεις: τη Δουνκέρκη στον βορρά και τη Βαρκελώνη στον νότο. Απώτερος σκοπός αυτής της αποστολής είναι ο προσδιορισμός του μήκους του πρότυπου μέτρου και η καθιέρωση μιας νέας οικουμενικής μονάδας μέτρησης - «για όλους τους ανθρώπους, για όλες της εποχές», όπως διεκήρυττε ο φιλόσοφος και μέλος της Εθνοσυνέλευσης και διαφόρων επιτροπών, Κοντορσέ.

Το ταξίδι των δύο αστρονόμων πολύ γρήγορα μετατρέπεται σε περιπέτεια. Οι Ντελάμπρ και Μεσέν διασχίζουν δυσπρόσιτες και αφιλόξενες περιοχές και αντιμετωπίζουν κάθε λογής κινδύνους. Στην πορεία, ο Ντελάμπρ πέφτει σε δυσμένεια από την Επιτροπή Κοινής Σωτηρίας, ενώ ο Μεσέν συλλαμβάνεται, φυλακίζεται στην Ισπανία και αργότερα εξορίζεται στην Ιταλία. Στη διάρκεια της απομόνωσής του ξαναζεί νοερά τα γεγονότα. Μια σκέψη τον βασανίζει: η πιθανότητα να έχει κάνει λάθος στις μετρήσεις του.

Η περίληψη μιας ιστορίας που ανατέμνει την πιο αιματοβαμμένη περίοδο της Δημοκρατίας, τα χρόνια που οδήγησαν στην έλευση του Ναπολέοντα. Άνεμος αλλαγής στην κοινωνία, ελπίδες για κάτι νέο, περισσότερο τίμιο, ισότητα, ελευθερία, αδελφότητα. Λέξεις που αποφασίζεται να φύγουν από τα βιβλία και να υλοποιηθούν σε κάθε πράξη και πρακτική. Η επιστημονική κοινότητα, με τους Κοντορσέ, Λαβουαζίέ, δεν μένει αμέτοχη. Νέα μέτρα και σταθμά. Ίσα για όλους, καινούργια, δίχως τα ίχνη του παρελθόντος, να αμφισβητούν την εγκυρότητα και την αξία τους. Η αποστάσεις, το βάρος και η μέτρηση του Μεσημβρινού, που θα δώσει το γεωγραφικό μέτρο, κατατάσσοντας την νεότευκτη Γαλλική Δημοκρατία ανάμεσα στις επιστημονικές δυνάμεις του κόσμου, που αλλάζουν τα δεδομένα με μετρήσεις και δεδομένα και όχι μόνο με τσιτάτα. Οι δυο αστρονόμοι, θα βρεθούν στη δίνη των αλλαγών. Από την πτώση της μοναρχίας, την άνοδο των τρομοκρατών της γκιλοτίνας, τον Γαλλο Ισπανικό πόλεμο, μέχρι την έλευση του Βοναπάρτη, εκείνοι θα μείνουν προσηλωμένοι στον σκοπό τους. Ο Ντελάμπρ, περισσότερο διπλωμάτης, θα ολοκληρώσει το έργο, δίχως ποτέ να σφετεριστεί την δουλειά του συναδέλφου του. Ο Μεσέν, με το έργο του να φτάνει μέχρι την Ισπανία, θα απομονωθεί, θα γίνει ένας επιστήμονας ερημίτης, που το όνειρο του, θα τον μαστιγώνει με τη μορφή του εφιάλτη των μετρήσεων και της ορθότητας τους.

Ο Γκετζ σε ένα βιβλίο που ξεκίνησε για κινηματογραφικό σενάριο, παίρνει μια επιστημονική ανακάλυψη και την μετατρέπει σε επιστημονική περιπέτεια. Ήρωες όχι γραμμωμένοι των γυμναστηρίων, αλλά αστρονόμοι που αν και ασθμαίνουν ανεβαίνουν σε καμπαναριά, βουνά και όπου το καθήκον επιτάσσει για να πραγματοποιήσουν μετρήσεις. Περιμένοντας για μέρες μέσα σε καταιγίδες, την αχτίδα του φωτός που θα επιτρέψει την πολυπόθητη μέτρηση. Φυλάσσοντας τα επιστημονικά όργανα τους, που κλέβουν επιτήδειοι, δίχως να αντιλαμβάνονται την αξία τους, στα πλέον απίθανα σημεία. Αντιμετωπίζοντας, ομάδες κακοποιών, αλλά και νεόκοπους λαϊκούς αγωνιστές, που μειδιούν αν δεν γελάσουν κατάμουτρα απέναντι στην επιστημονική σταυροφορία των δύο αστρονόμων. Σε συνθήκες διαρκούς αμφισβήτησης, με την υποψία οτι είναι φιλομοναρχικοί, υπέρ της μιας ή της άλλης παράταξης των επαναστατών, φίλοι των Ισπανών, οι Ντελάμπρ και Μεσέν, δεν σταματούν. Το όνειρο τη μέτρησης του Μεσημβρινού, χαλυβδώνει τη θέση τους, ενάντιά σε κάθε πολιτική αλλαγή, σε κάθε εμπόδιο. Σε μια επταετία που άλλαξε ο πολιτικός χάρτης της Γαλλίας, οι δύο επιστήμονες, περνώντας δια πυρός και σιδήρου, έκαναν το ακατόρθωτο. Ένωσαν την επιστήμη, με το πάθος για αλλαγή και κατάφεραν σε πείσμα πολέμων, επαναστάσεων και καχυποψίας, να φέρουν τον επιστημονικό ορθολογισμό στην Ευρώπη ως θέσφατο. Ένωσαν αγρότες, πολίτες, αστούς και στρατιωτικούς σε έναν κοινό αγώνα, την μέτρηση του Μεσημβρινού. Όμως ο Μεσέν βασανίστηκε από μια αμφιβολία, που του στοίχισε, παρ ολίγον τη ζωή, σε μεγάλο βαθμό την ηρεμία του και σχεδόν την οικογένεια του. Ο Γκέτζ παρακολουθεί τον αστό επιστήμονα που μετατρέπεται σε ερημίτη και αποκαλύπτει το μυστικό του σε ένα βιβλίο που αποτελεί υπόδειγμα, πώς η επιστήμη μπορεί να γίνει το καλύτερο μυθιστόρημα δράσης. Συμπάσχουμε με τους αστρονόμους ανησυχούμε για τον χρόνο που τρέχει. Συμπονούμε τον Κοντορσέ και ακολουθούμε την μοναχική πορεία του τέλους του. Παρακολουθούμε τη Γαλλία να τρώει τα παιδιά της, πλην των δύο αστρονόμων που σε πείσμα των αντιξοοτήτων καταφέρνουν να ολοκληρώσουν μια πρότυπη αποστολή. Αλλά το τέλος θα έρθει όταν λυτρωθεί ο ο Μεσέν, από τον φίλο και συνάδελφο του Ντελάμπρ. Εδώ ο Γκέτζ θα δώσει την ερμηνεία του, με σεβασμό, ανατρέποντας μεγάλο μέρος όσων πιστέψαμε διαβάζοντας το βιβλίο.

Σφιχτοδεμένο, ορθολογιστικό, επιστημονικό όσο χρειάζεται, όπου χρειάζεται, κυλά όπως ξεκίνησε να γράφεται, σαν το σενάριο μια ταινίας. Δεν απλοποιεί τα επιστημονικά κομμάτια, αλλά τα ενσωματώνει στην αφήγηση και έχει τον αναγνώστη κοινωνό της γνώσης όσο και των προσπαθειών των κεντρικών ηρώων. Οι χαρακτήρες γνώριμοι, μιλάμε για πραγματικά πρόσωπα, αντανακλούν τη διαφορετικότητα του επιστήμονα. Ο τακτικός και συνεπής Μεσέν, μαζί με τον Ντελάμπρ και την πιο ανέμελη ματιά του, θα συνδυαστούν για να δώσουν απαντήσεις. Ο Γκέτζ υφαίνει ένα μυθιστόρημα με δυνατή πλοκή, γεμάτη συναισθήματα, εντάσεις και όραμα, που οδηγεί τους δύο κεντρικούς ήρωες. Παράλληλα ζωγραφίζει μια τοιχογραφία των κρίσιμων πρώτων χρόνων της Γαλλικής επανάστασης και συνδυάζει το όραμα των δύο επιστημόνων, με το όραμα ενός ολόκληρου λαού. Το τέλος είναι γλυκόπικρο ,όπως και η πραγματικότητα. Την επανάσταση διαδέχτηκε ο Ύπατος Ναπολέοντας και το νέο μέτρο, η ελεύθερη χρήση των παλιών. Το 1840 η δουλειά της επιστημονικής κοινότητας προς όφελος του λαού και της επανάστασης θα επανέλθει οριστικά και με μόνιμη ισχύ. Απολαύστε το βιβλίο, με μια μεζούρα δίπλα σας και αναλογιστείτε, τα απλά πράγματα που ορίζουν την ζωή μας πόσο κόπο χρειάστηκαν για να μετρηθούν και οροθετηθούν. Ένα βιβλίο που θα κάνει όσους απεχθάνονται τα μαθηματικά και τις θετικές επιστήμες, να τα δουν με άλλο μάτι.

INNERWISH- "Ash of eternal flame'

 At last the new album from Greek power metalers INNERWISH. A band that has shown signs of maturing from album to album and also a healthy diversification. Although the elements we all loved, the power,strength, heavy metal feeling are all here, again the band decided to provide a more mature, blended final product. If you had to give a definition, to someone who has never heard of,i would describe them as the perfect mix between ELEGY,KAMELOT, RAINBOW and EARLY QUEENSRYCHE with the IRON MAIDEN, Bruce Dickinson hear beating in them..

From the majestic opening track "Forevermore" to the darker, more heavy "Sea Of Lies"with Hansi Kürsch (BLIND GUARDIAN) giving extra depth and power to the song's message about modern day refugees, the band is on fire. But what INNERWISH have achieved is shown off at "Higher" and "Breathe" along with "Once again". Songs that remain at the heavy metal stratosphere but in their heart looking to other more melodic directions,without being FM radio friendly. The work of QUEENSRYCHE at "Rage for order." is alive and breathing in these songs,where the sound colors are far more than the simple black, blue and grey of the metal palette .On the other hand you have "Soul asunder" and "Primal scream" , pure European metal anthems, made for live classic,sing alongs. You have the excellent RAINBOW inspired "The hands of Doom" with its Graig Goldie era solo, taking the leads outside the comfort zone of the twin guitar MAIDEN sound."Cretan Warriors" is among their heaviest moments, taking a bow to the US power metal scene, ARMORED SAINT, SANCTUARY.

At the end of the listening, you have an album full of power, melody, fresh ideas and not one filler or a dull moment. An album with its stand out moments who are different for the listener depending on your background. High level of musicianship, excellent production, crystal clear sound and great songwriting.

A band who had us waiting too long ,but the final result surpassed our expectations.

Beth Hart -"You still got me"

 A troubled soul, a real blues woman, American songwriter,singer Beth Hart releases her eleventh studio album and the angel of inspiration is by her shoulder.

From the opening track "Savior with a Razor" featuring Slash, a painful, har rockin blues song, to the groovy "Suga N My Bowl" (featuring Eric Gales), Hart shines all over the songs."Never Underestimate a Gal" has the swing feeling inside it and the song speak for Hart herself, never underestimate a woman with her strength to fight the inner demons."Wanna Be Big Bad Johnny Cash"written by Hart and Glen Burtnik ahs the blues, country feeling that would make Cash proud for his heritage and Hart a real contender for his crown."Wonderful World" is a "piano-led ballad while the raw, dark  "Don't Call the Police" balanced by the soulful "You Still Got Me". The album closes with groovy, edgy  "Machine Gun Vibrato" where Hart's voice reminiscent of the bootleggers tommy guns sound,the perfect soundtrack for StValentine's massacre.

All in all , Hart's eleven album, finds her fresh, rejuvenated and more and above all true to her musical calling,combining groove, swing and the pain the blues carries with them from a woman who lives proudly showing her scars.

BOC - "Ghost stories"

 

If this is the final "studio" album, their 15th "studio" by the progressive/hard rock/metal pioneer/giants BOC, then it is almost a complete disappointment. A compilation of leftovers,comprises a dozen songs originally recorded between 1978-1983 (with one from 2016), mostly from the middle and late period of the band with the more polished sound plus a couple of cover versions, of songs we already knew by their live renditions like 'Kick out the jams" by MC5.

No one questions the ability of BOC to write great songs. Even their leftovers, whatever they decide to play twelve bars/60s (BEATLES) influenced at "Gun", the funk meets the DOORS (at the keyboards department) "Soul Jive", Hard rock in the BOC of the late 80s era time in "Supernatural", " Don't Come Running to Me", slow tempo boogie, "Money Machine" with the BEATLESesque chorus, twelve bar rock n roll in "Cherry", the jazzy "Shot In The Dark" that grows in to a hard rocking song in the vein of "Revolution by night" songs, "The only thing"a mid tempo melodic ballad with the PROCOL HARUM style keyboards or covers "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" (MC5),"If i fell" (BEATLES) these are songs other bands would never even dreamed to have in their original studio albums. But, the big but, Bloom,Roeser and co have the guts and the talent to create even in our Spotify dominated days, great songs as they proved in their recent studio album. So why not get themselves in the studio for one last time, let the creative juices flow and let the bunch of harcore fans get happy and buy the tangent material, cd, vinyl,whatever and the rest listen to the various platforms. We are all more than happy listening to new songs at their concerts, love how they enrich their l;ive set, with oldies , songs not often played or from their 21st century works.

They may feel old, tired and disappointed by the road taken by the modern music industry but along with them there is a small, hardcore group of fans like "Mike Mavrogiannis, in Greece who deserve one last final kiss of fresh air with new songs. At the album now, the collection has some highlights ,not a real low, so i'll say. "Cherry", "Shot in the dark", "Soul Jive" ,.are above average (for BOC standards). The sound is similar to "Cultösaurus Erectus", "Fire of Unknown Origin ", "Revolution by night" and Mirrors", mostly with the metal element bending nicely with their FM aesthetic. The covers are nice, nothing to get yourself on fire and at the end of the listening, you'll find yourself eager to revisit their vast discography and the live albums,tribute to older studio works with more interest.

So if Eric Bloom and Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser read this, there is a whole Greek spinach pie for both of you, just go back to the studio for one final time.
