HEAVY PETTIN- "Rock generation"

| Heavy Pettin Rock generation |
They hailed them as one of the big names of the second wave of NWOBHM. They mock them for attempting to enter the Eurovision contest. Glasgow's HEAVY PETTIN were always a band that wasn't meant to suit everyone's taste. The only surviving member from back in their heyday is lead vocalist Stephen “Hamie” Hayman. His charcoal vocals, which sounded more and more like Biff were melodic, yet heavy, not exactly the blues based vocals most bands of its era were in. Either were high pitching (IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, TOKYO BLADE) or melodic (DEMON, PRAYING MANTIS). Add to this the production of their first album, a bit muddy, you had to love them or loathe them. Attempts were made to get the original band back together again, but old grudges and musical differences resulted in Hamie being the only original member in their latest reincarnation Joining Hayman are Dave “Davo” Aitken and Richie “St. James” Daws on guitars, David “Boycee” Boyce on bass and Mick “The Wizard” Ivory on drums
Now after 3 studio albums and some years on hiatus they return with a new album, their first in 30 years and surprise, surprise they still got it. Although “Hamie” vocals are even more nasal, they know how to pen a good, anthemic song, as the opener "Rock generation" or the more uptempo "Faith healer". But HP are not a one dimensional band, they never meant to be DEF LEPPARD and were definitely for a bigger audience than the underrated SAMSON. Their sound has dark ,modern elements referring to bands like ALTERBRIDGE or later days SAXON (we already said it, it's the vocals metal). And then comes "Oblivion" a Brit pop/FM rock song that could be a breakthrough single with Roni Lee adding her female vocals ,spicing up the result, if there was still rock radio, looking for new songs and not pensioners playlists.
'Mother earth" is MIDNIGHT OIL meeting MAIDEN in a powerful melodic rock combination with some great old school soloing, not shredding, a blast from the pat to the future.Rock n roller "X-rated" has the Def Lep sign all over it and it is a song aiming for the arenas."Bullets and pills" is another up tempo rocker, a filer maybe but a nice one."Line in the sand" is another melodic mid tempo rocker ,groovy and anthemic. In the same vein is "Live YR best life" showing the band still knows how to pen a good tune. Finally a modern rocker in the form of "This life" shows why only "Hamie" is still on board asn the musical differences from the old HP are more than obvious, a far more low tune, "dark" and modern rock song, aiming to a younger generation.

So in conclusion, "Rock generation" is an album that won't disappoint HEAVY PETTIN fans but i doubt if it will gain new and younger ones as they have aimed with the sound and songwriting. If there is a God of second chance ,they deserve it and they definitely proved with "Rock generation" they can have it.
